Fans of Utah Football, Basketball, Tailgating, and Everything Utes. Something is seriously wrong fundamentally, emphasis on mentally, with this Utah team. Here are some of the struggles they need to fix now. Inbounding the ball. Why is every inbound pass a struggle?
It's always a hesitant pass at 4. Stupid turnovers. Over and back? 1. Simply dropping the ball out of bounds. That all points to being headstrong, I don't think this team is very headstrong. Free throws. Some games are amazing, others are downright awful. Again, a mental game.
Mid- range jumpshooters. Utah doesn't have any. Chapman is probably the best mid- range shooter, and he only makes them after a foul away from the ball. Lay ups. Why does this team have such difficulty making a lay up? Reyes simply hates lay ups.
Poeltl has been throwing the ball at the hoop lately. Kuzma just blows them. It's very tough to watch. Defensive rebounding aka giving up offensive boards. Why does Utah give up so many offensive rebounds? Every game it's the same story, second chance points kill Utah.. Defending the three.
Utah gives up way too many wide open threes. Some of this is Taylor, guys just shoot over him.
Some of this is not rotating out. I know Utah overplays the inside but they get killed from deep. Screens. Utah simply sucks at screens at times. Too often guys roll off the screen before it's even set.

The Utah Utes simply have one of those teams that comes with a terrific fan base no matter where they take to the field, as fans.
Backdoor screens and cut screens are weak. Did Stubblefield teach them how to set a screen? Majerus, now that guy can set a screen. Brekkott Chapman and Kyle Kuzma.
I'm sorry, these guys are just dumb. Too often they are in the wrong spot or they run the wrong way.
They both are crazy athletic but the synapses just aren't firing like they should with them. They both look very lost at times. Loveridge and Tucker. Somebody tell these guys they can move. Yes they are great three point shooters but just standing there isn't going to get you open. The word is out, let them drive and they'll turn the ball over (although Tucker has looked decent lately).
There are a lot of good things Utah does. Defensively they are strong and they don't get in foul trouble. Sometimes the passing is amazing and they do spread the floor well at times. Against long teams, like Oregon, those passing lanes are gone and Utah looks dead in the water. Any good coach will say "make yourself big and get those hands in the passing lanes." Do that and you can stop Utah. Poeltl appears to be in a sophomore slump. Last year he was relatively unknown but this year he is every teams target.
It appears to be frustrating him. Double teams and aggressive positioning are throwing him off his game. He also appears to be timid to being aggressive, he's received a lot of bad calls against him and I think it's affecting his aggression. I think games like this are good. Every good boxer needs to receive a right hook now and then, how they respond will show how headstrong they really are. The bonehead plays have to stop.
My 0. 0. 2 > > Comment.. Character! It appears that this team lacks character. There doesn't seem to be a "guy" who will stare down the jerk who just pissed in his Cheerios!
Just perhaps, one problem lies in promises made to the mysterious disappearing center on the team to keep him from bolting for the money last year. Is the inane exercise that is loosely called the offense an exercise in attempting to involve a post man who is lost in space? Yes, there have been games where everything has clicked and, for the most part, the team looked like to be building toward the dance! The game is easy when everything clicks; the problem magnifies when things aren't clicking and there is no one to step up and slap the team in the face! Perhaps they are trying to be too many things that they are not; a post dominated offense, a beyond the arc offense, a motion offense. I have seen snippets of each but don't know who this team is!
They seem to be a bunch of nice guys and it would be a fun group to hang with but somewhere, somehow this team needs to find character or it going to be a long season of ups and downs. Comment.. Once I accepted Loveridge for what he is - a good spot- up shooter - I found peace. Like any shooter, he will be hot and cold. He has had big games against good teams, and he has disappeared in games. He does not create his own shot, so a team can take him out with a good defender (which hopefully opens things up for others). He's not there for his defense or rebounding, although his rebounding numbers paint a better picture than your description.
He gets those minutes because he's the best shooter on the team and because there isn't a stronger option. It's not like we have a glass- eating defensive star on the bench who can't get minutes because Jordan is taking them. I'm pretty sure he's worked harder at basketball than most of us have ever worked at anything, so it's not fair to call him lazy. I'll happily yell for both JL and BT on senior day (from my couch). Comment.. Taylor might have an off night now and then, and he hasn't been stellar so far this season, but he NEVER disappears, home or away. Loveridge won't take a contested shot.
He hides out beyond the arc and if things are JUST PERFECT he deigns to launch a shot. Which he never follows. His D is half hearted and offensive rebounds are for other people I guess. Larry gives him a lot of minutes, always has and in 8. I trust. But he will never make my top 5. Utes. I can't really think of a ballin' Ute who seemed to care as little as JL. I hope he makes a total fool of me tonight, I really do.
